Updates from Edinburgh and our work across Islamic art, games, and GLAM

Published 12 days ago • 1 min read

Hello!

It's been a busy and eventful spring and I have lots of news to share:

January finally saw the publication of my second book, A Bridge to the Sky. After more than a decade of research and preparation it was incredible to finally see my exploration of 'Abbas b. Firnas and his 'medieval first in flight' in print!

From my ongoing work across Islamic art, games, and GLAM:

  • March: me and two of our Digital Lab team brought our Assassin's Creed collaboration to the game industry's premier event: Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. We learned so much at this week-long games industry event. I think we're probably still all processing it! A replay of my talk is available in the GDC Vault, for those who have access to this resource. Otherwise, you can read coverage of it in game development news here.
  • April - I spoke about our work in Spain and London:
    • At Casa Árabe in Madrid and Córdoba - a wonderful chance to catch up with old and new friends, including Rafael Blanco at Universidad de Córdoba, about our upcoming field trip on Córdoba in the Age of the Caliphs! If you're not familiar with Casa Árabe's work, do check out their website
    • In London I visited a new organisation, OKRE, aiming to bring together researchers and the entertainment industry. I participated in the 'Think Generationally, Think Digitally, Think Differently' panel at the OKRE Summit: Entertainment to Change the World. I presented our Assassin's Creed project alongside two women who brought Spotify and UNICEF together to create mental health support for younger audiences

We also recently announced our new Game Designer in Residence! In case you missed that you can find it on the website here.

That's all for now - I'm going to be busy in coming weeks contacting applicants and organising the game dev team for Digital Munya 3, so stay tuned...

Sending all my best,

Glaire
